1Peter 5:7-8 Cast Your Cares

This is my very first blog post and my first blog hop. I chose to write about our scripture verse 1 Peter 5:7-8 “Cast all your anxieties on Him, for He cares for you.” I have read that verse many times in the past and understood that God wants us to give him our worries, but as I read and re-read it this week there were some things that really stood out to me that I didn’t notice before.
The first thing that jumped out was the word “CAST”. Right away I found myself thinking about the disciples. The first four disciples that Jesus called to come follow Him were; Simon and his brother Andrew, who were commercial fisherman, and Zebedee’s sons, James and John, who Jesus found in a boat mending their fishing nets. I don’t know for sure, but I think that those fishing nets were really big and really heavy! I can imagined Simon and Andrew gathering the nets up in their arms and heaving them into the water. It must have taken a lot of strength and effort to “CAST” their nets. The second thing that jumped out at me was the word “ALL”. When the disciples cast their heavy nets it was “ALL” or nothing! They gathered , they heaved and they (wait for it) …they “LET GO!”. I am a good gatherer….I can gather every big and small worry up in my not so strong arms and wear myself out carrying my own personalized heavy-duty fishing nets. Sometimes I even get into the “heaving position” , knowing that I need to give these worries to God….but actually “letting go”? That is another story. As I continued reading our verse though, I think I found the key, “For He cares for you”. Knowing and believing that God cares about us …really cares, about every aspect of our lives, gives us the courage to “let go”and trust that whatever we give to Him, he is able to do such a better job of taking care of it than we can. I love to watch good movies and one of my favorite lines came from the movie “STEPMOM” staring Julia Roberts. After Julia’s’ character listens to her husbands ex-wife share her concerns about Julia’s’ ability to be a good influence for her children, Julia agrees that she has a lot of room for improvement. She knows that she could never take the place of the children’s mom, who was dying of cancer.
But then she says something that is a game changer. With great sincerity and passion, after acknowledging all of her failures and shortcomings, She says,” I have their best interest at heart” That’s it! He cares for us! He has our best interest at heart! And unlike Julia Roberts character, He doesn’t have any failures or shortcomings! We can trust Him! He promises to work “ALL” things together for good!
So let’s go fishing and ” cast our cares, for He cares for us!”
